Swamimalai, near Kumbakonam in Tamil Nadu, is one of the Arupadai Veedu — the six abodes of Lord Murugan. It is revered as the place where the young Murugan became the teacher of his own father, expounding the meaning of the sacred syllable Om (Pranava) to Lord Shiva himself, and so is worshipped here as Swaminathan, the teacher of God.
The shrine sits atop a hill reached by sixty steps, each said to represent a year in the Tamil calendar.
