Takht Sri Damdama Sahib at Talwandi Sabo, in Bathinda district of Punjab, is the Takht of the book. Guru Gobind Singh came here after the campaigns of 1705, and the name records what he did on arriving: damdama means a breathing-place, a halt. He stayed, and during that stay the final recension of the Sikh scripture was prepared, the Guru dictating and Bhai Mani Singh writing, with the hymns of the ninth Guru, Guru Tegh Bahadur, added to the volume Guru Arjan had compiled a century earlier at Amritsar.
That volume is the Damdami Bir, and it is the recension of 1,430 angs that Sikhs read, sing, and bow before today. For the work done here the Guru blessed Talwandi Sabo as Guru ki Kashi (Kashi being Varanasi, the old seat of Sanskrit scholarship) meaning this would be a seat of Sikh learning. The town has kept that character; it is a place associated with the study of Gurbani rather than with a battle.
Damdama Sahib is the most recently recognised of the five Takhts. The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee passed the resolution on 18 November 1966, and the Government of India recognised it in April 1999, during the tercentenary of the Khalsa. That recognition is not universally accepted, the Budha Dal of the Akali-Nihang Sikhs maintains that its own seat should hold the fifth place.
